The technical foundations every business website needs before content and links can work. A practical checklist you can run against your own site.
Crawlability and indexation
If search engines can't crawl and index a page, nothing else matters. Verify your robots.txt allows crawling of important pages, your XML sitemap lists canonical URLs and is submitted to Search Console, and no stray noindex tags survive from staging.
Check indexation with a site: search and Search Console's coverage reports. Pages excluded unexpectedly — duplicates, redirects, crawl anomalies — are silent traffic leaks.
Speed and Core Web Vitals
Measure on real mobile connections, not your office fibre. Priorities: compress and properly size images (modern formats, explicit dimensions), defer non-critical JavaScript, use a CDN, and keep third-party scripts on a strict budget.
Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5s and a stable layout (low CLS) are the thresholds that matter. Every marketing tag you add spends from this budget — treat them as costs, not freebies.
Structure, metadata and schema
Every important page needs a unique title tag, a genuine meta description, one clear H1 and a logical H2/H3 hierarchy. Canonicals should resolve cleanly, and redirects should be 301s in single hops.
Structured data (Organization, Service, Article, BreadcrumbList, FAQ where eligible) helps search engines understand and present your content. Only mark up what users can actually see on the page.
Internal linking and content structure
Your most valuable pages should be reachable within two or three clicks, linked with descriptive anchor text from relevant contexts. Service pages link to industries and case studies; articles link to services; everything links to a way to contact you.
Run this checklist quarterly. Technical SEO isn't a one-time fix — sites drift as content, plugins and scripts accumulate.
