Expanding search visibility across countries is an architecture problem. Hreflang, URL structures, localisation and the mistakes that sink international sites.
Choose your URL architecture deliberately
Three options: country-code domains (example.de), subdomains (de.example.com), or subdirectories (example.com/de/). For most businesses, subdirectories win: they consolidate domain authority while still allowing clear country targeting in Search Console.
ccTLDs send the strongest local signal but split your authority across domains — expensive to build up. Choose once; migrating international structures later is painful.
Hreflang: necessary and unforgiving
Hreflang annotations tell search engines which language/country version of a page to show which users. They're essential for similar-language markets (US/UK/AU English) where duplicate-content confusion otherwise splits your rankings.
The rules are strict: tags must be reciprocal, reference the canonical version, and include an x-default. Errors are common and silent — validate after every structural change.
Localise, don't just translate
Search intent differs by market even in the same language. Spelling, terminology, pricing, examples, regulations and the questions people ask all vary. Pages that genuinely serve a market rank; translated templates with a swapped country name increasingly don't.
This has a resource implication: fewer, genuinely localised country pages beat dozens of thin ones. Google's helpful-content systems are explicitly tuned against scaled, low-value page generation.
A pragmatic expansion sequence
Start with one or two markets where you have real business traction. Build properly localised landing pages, earn some local links and citations, and measure. Expand on evidence, not ambition.
International SEO compounds like domestic SEO — the first market teaches you the playbook, and each subsequent one gets cheaper and faster.
